Ocean’s Edge Table by Tyson Atwell

The ‘Ocean’s Edge’ dining table is part of an ongoing body of work utilizing a CNC router to digitally sculpt oceanic waveforms moving across planar wood surfaces. The undulating surface that rises out of and dips into the center of the table was developed in CAD by ‘lofting’ a sequence of tide curves sourced from the entrance of the San Francisco Bay.

After reading San Francisco is Burning, Dennis Smith’s superb book of San Francisco’s reaction to the 1906 earthquake, I got to thinking. What if I could precisely line up photos taken in 1906 with my own and combine the two together? 

The newly redesigned Water Planet is the result of a collaboration between Thinc Design and the architectural firm Urban A&O. This centerpiece of the Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco now includes fun interactive elements like walls that appear to ripple when you touch them.
